Who is my mother?

Perhaps most of you would agree with me that in various matters of our lives we very often like to take short cut. This opinion applies not only to our daily movement, but also to our thinking and actions. We like to think and act quickly, just right now.

For example, we think that the Church is our home and other people are our brothers and sisters. And this is universal Christian thinking. This view that we are brothers and sisters contains some of the truth. But today’s feast of Mary, Mother of the Church makes me aware that this description isn’t exactly how we are thinking about it in our minds.

Do you remember when Jesus said: Everyone who hears God’s Word and fulfils it is my brother and sister? Well, He didn’t say: Everyone is a brother and sister to me, but only who hears God’s Word and fulfils it.

So, if someone doesn’t care about God’s will and keeps God’s commandments only when it is convenient for him/her – such person, even if s/he was baptized and considered himself/herself a Christian, s/he would be sort of alive, but also dead; s/he would be a brother or sister, but also a stranger in the same time.

But Jesus said even more: by doing the will of my Father in heaven, you will be a mother to me. And this part of today’s feast turns everything upside down. Because how can we become a mother for Him?

We normally think: Jesus has only one mother – Mary. That’s it! This case is closed. And here Jesus suddenly tells us such thing. And once again, when we think that we – men – can be a mother to Jesus, we really don’t know what we should think about it. But! When we could go deeply and think deeply about these words of Jesus, I can see only one solution to this difficult situation.

I think of it in this way: everyone who does God’s will is the brother or sister of the Lord Jesus. So, the brother or sister of our Lord could be everyone, who accepts faith. And that makes sense. But not everyone is His mother.

But, let’s think logically for a moment, in a human way: who do we consider in our world as a mother, or who we call a mother? Is every woman a mother? No! Only the one  who gives birth to a child! Am I right?

So, the mother of Christ are only those people who really contribute to the fact that He is born in the souls of more and more new people.

The Lord’s mother will be only the one who pours Him into the heart of the listener who through his teaching generates the love and the truth of the Lord in the heart of his neighbour. And notice how easy it is to be a brother and sister, and how difficult the task is to be a mother.

Chatting with people and telling them about God, about our faith; bringing to people fresh hope that God loves them; giving people a new spiritual life; bringing God to their hearts – this is very difficult and arduous task.

Today, everywhere you go, try to bring God to other people’s hearts. On that way you will best honour His mother Our Lady who prays for us all.

Good luck!
